Optical Topography

Optical topography was featured on The Scientist Jan-05 issue as "Brain imaging moves beyond MRI". The thought of using optical topography to get another perspective of what is happening in the brain during normal brain activity is exciting.

MRI has been a wonderful tool to help us understand the innerworking of the physical body. fMRI went further to allow for functional mapping over 3d structure.

Optical topography is non-invasive and portable. Instead of sitting in large MR/CT machines, the patient wears a head cap containing many optical sources and detectors. These source-detector pairs allow for calculations to determine the scattering and absorption through various depths of tissue.

Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) || bonus info.

Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) technology which captures an object or person under a variety of lighting conditions then combine it into a single, interactive photo. Inside the box is a concave surface studded with 81 LED flashes. A custom microcontroller inside triggers each flash in sequence and a camera mounted at the rear captures an image at each stop.
